Papers, 1771-1885, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

This collection includes correspondence, receipts and legal instruments of the Waller family (244 items), plantation records concerning the sale of slaves, and the records of Aylett Waller's militia career concluding with his command of the Sixteenth Regiment during the War of 1812. The bulk of the militia records date from July to September, 1814, during the British invasion which culminated in the burning of Washington. They include provision returns, reports, special and general orders, equipment reports and intelligence reports on the movements of the British fleet up the Chesapeake Bay. Also included among the papers is a letter from the Baptist Church of Christ at Bethesda Meeting house to the Goshen Association at Pamunkey Meeting house dated October [16], 1800, and Aylett Waller's records as the guardian of Elijah Wigglesworth. Other persons included among the papers are Curtis Waller, Nelson S. Waller, Rufus B. Merchant, Sharp Smith, Benjamin Waller, and Absalom Waller.
